RALLY IN VAIN: Pugnacious Pinoys hand Qatar their first defeat

Philippines almost blew away a 23-point lead before regaining their bearings just in the nick of time to beat Qatar 80-70 in a needle Group E game, that left the latter with their first defeat in four games in this competition. The win also left the home team with an outside chance of topping Group E, if Qatar beat the red-hot Chinese Taipei on the morrow and force a tie-break on point differential.

All that almost didn’t happen when Qatar forced their way back into the game after trailing by double-digits towards the end of the second quarter, with a scorching run that shocked the hosts who till then had ridden a wave of energy, backed by a vociferous capacity crowd.
