Uruguay stun Spain to reach Under-20 World Cup semi-finals

Uruguay Under-20s have scored a winner in extra time to defeat Spain and reach the semi-finals of the U20 World Cup.

Spain started the game in typical fashion, dominating the possession and passing crisply, but it was Uruguay who created the first real chance of the match.

France defeated Uzbekistan 4-0 to reach the semifinals of the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday.

Yaya Sanogo scored in the 31st minute, and Paul Pogba and Florian Thauvin added goals from the penalty spot to give France a 3-0 halftime lead.

Iraq are through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup after Farhan Shakor’s decisive goal saw off ten-man Paraguay in extra time. The substitute’s 94th-minute strike settled an engrossing encounter and sent Turkey 2013’s surprise packages through a last-eight duel with Korea Republic.

Though the scoreline might suggest otherwise, this was one of the most open and entertaining matches of the tournament thus far, with plenty of chances for both sides. That neither team made the breakthrough in a lively first half was due almost entirely to the goalkeeping of Mohammed Hameed and Diego Morel, both of whom were in outstanding form.

Chile struck twice in the final ten minutes tobeat Croatia 2-0 and set up a FIFA U-20 World Cup quarter-final meeting with Ghana. Nicolas Castillo scored 81 minutes gone in the round of 16 match in Bursa before a Jozo Simunovic own goal sealed the European side's fate.

The early action was concentrated in midfield, but Croatia had an early sight of goal when Ante Rebic's corner eluded all but Simunovic at the back-post, but the big defender's control let him down – much to the relief of Dario Melo.

Brazil defeated Uruguay 2-1 to reach the final of soccer’s Confederations Cup, a warmup tournament for next year’s World Cup.

Brazil led 1-0 at halftime on a 41st-minute goal by Fred. Edinson Cavani tied it three minutes after the interval and Paulinho got the winning goal four minutes before the end of the game at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte.
